Borno State To Pay Parents Who Enroll Children in School

The Borno State Government says it will start paying parents who enroll their children to acquire Western education, especially in the northern part of the state.

Shettima said this initiative was part of the government's `Conditional Cash Transfer' scheme for poor households.
He said that the objective of the scheme was to ensure that parents sent their children to school rather than allow them roam the streets.
He blamed the Boko Haram insurgency for the poverty and ignorance in the state, adding that it disrupted the socio-economic activities in the state.
The governor urged parents to send their children parents to school to safeguard their future.
He said government was also working on plans to reconstruct the 825 classrooms destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgents, to prepare grounds for the commencement of academic programmes in the affected schools.

Responding, the chairman of the elders, Alhaji Ahmed Yusufari, thanked Shettima for the visit.
Meanwhile, Rep. Abdurrahman Terab, representing Bama in the House of Representatives, had said that about N3.5 billion would be needed to rebuild the town following numerous attacks by the Boko Haram sect.
Bama, the headquarters of Bama Local Government Area, was the second largest commercial city in the state before it suffered numerous Boko Haram attacks.
Terab, who represents Bama/Dikwa/Gamboru-Ngala in the House of Representatives, told newsmen in Maiduguri that the state government alone could not bear the burden of rebuilding Bama.
"It is massive" and will eat up a great chunk of the resources of the state.''
He appealed to the Federal Government to assist the once viable commercial town, as the market, which had been closed for so long, had resumed trading activities.
Roads leading to Bama were closed for over a month immediately after the major Boko Haram attack which led to the killing of 55 persons, mainly policemen.
